Our Mission

How We Got Started

There are many things that Los Angeles is best known for: TikTok houses, neon sunsets, and unforgettable food trucks. One accolade missing from the bunch is the fact that our city is leading the global fight against the climate crisis. Thanks to the tireless work of community leaders, local agencies, and non-profit organizations, L.A. was the first city to launch its own Green New Deal in 2019. Inspired to share the groundbreaking climate plan paving the way for a low-carbon and green-energy future, founder Gia Chinchilla recognized that the only voice missing was that of the youth.

This is when Climate Action LAb was born. This space was created for young Angelenos to learn about revolutionary green policy shaking up the city, listen to the stories of underrepresented voices in the movement, and be a part of a community that serves as an incubator for climate action.

We’re here to set up the conditions for learning, storytelling, and growth. You’re here to take action.

Our Pillars

1 - Inform the community about environmental wins and losses in Los Angeles and beyond.

We create digestible breakdowns of major climate news and complex environmental topics to equip our community with knowledge to take climate action.

2 - Highlight members who are making conscious efforts every day to improve the well-being of their community.

A Climate Action LAb “hero” is someone who takes climate action with everyday choices - from giving back to their community, taking public transportation, rallying, or using their social media platform to educate. Our aim is to demonstrate that anyone can be a climate hero.

3 - Normalize the conversation around climate action and social equity.

Climate action can be intimidating and one of the best ways to humanize it is to make it casual. That’s why social media content can be so powerful. By removing a distant topic from headlines and addressing it in our daily antics online, we create a space to have a conversation around climate change. From memes to pull-quotes, our aim is to make content that is relatable enough to share with in friends’ group chats.

4 - Create a space for young Angelenos to convene on raising awareness.

We host in-person and now digital events for the Climate Action LAb community to gather and discuss formative changes needed to uplift Los Angeles.
